Exploring Colombia’s Creative Ecosystem
Colombia’s cultural exports are well known to many of us, from the hit telenovela Ugly Betty—with nearly 20 local-language versions—to the music chart dominance of artists like J. Balvin, Maluma, and Karol G.
Colombia’s creativity boom: Creative industries have become a driver of Colombia’s economy. In 2021, the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated that Colombia’s creative industries accounted for 3.4% of gross domestic product—part of the estimated $414 billion in global economic impact from global Screen Production (2019). And greater creative sector activity drives growth in other sectors, like tourism and information and communication technologies.
Panel Discussion: In partnership with the organizers of the Bogotá Audiovisual Market (BAM)—the country’s largest content-buying event—the U.S. Chamber’s Global Innovation Policy Center hosted a virtual discussion on how intellectual property protections have fueled Colombia’s creative industries, as well as how these industries support the local and national economy.
